KAIWAKA FOOTPATH
IMPROVEMENTS
Footpath works are paving the way for safer and simpler
pedestrian access in Kaiwaka. The team has laid over 500m²
of new footpath and vehicle crossings, and reshaped more
than 600m² of earth and topsoil.
The stormwater system by Oneriri Road has also had an
upgrade. The new footpath will connect the footbridge at the
northern end of town to the footbridge at Oneriri Road and is
a project in Kaipara District Council’s Long Term Plan 2024
-2027.
The new footpath connecting the footbridge at the northern
end of town with the footbridge at Oneriri Road is
progressing well in this sunny weather. Access to each
business is available at all times. For your safety and the
crew’s please follow signs and their instructions. All going
well, they are tracking to wrap up in early August.

WEATHER
JUNE
Here we are, half way through the year
already!
June was very wet in the first half of
the month with 150ml falling over 14
days, then a very welcome, fine break
for 5 days before another 64ml falling
over two days.
The total rainfall recorded at our place
for June was 152ml over a total of 19
days.
Derek recorded 157ml over 23days in
Hakaru. The highest rainfall for June at
our place was 311.5ml recorded in
2018.
The least recorded at our place for June
was in 2012 with a mere 50ml.
We are past the shortest day of the year
and the deciduous trees are now resting
for a while, before sprouting new
leaves. The Brynderwyn waterfall and
the waterfall on the Topuni corner are
both flowing very well. Have a great
July!
Cheers, Karen
Tumuaki Tauhoa School
Celebrating Vivienne Goldsmith: A
Champion for Education and
Community
For over 25 years, Vivienne Goldsmith has
been a driving force in education, leadership,
and community service across our
region and she’s not slowing down.
As Principal of Tauhoa School, Vice
President of the Tai Tokerau Primary
Principals’ Association (TTPA), and a long-
standing member of NZEI Te Riu Roa,
Vivienne continues to shape the future of
education with passion and purpose. Her
influence stretches far beyond the classroom,
reaching across networks, rural communities,
and advocacy spaces.
At Tauhoa School, Vivienne’s leadership
style is grounded in compassion, action, and
fairness, which has kept our kura thriving as
a dynamic centre of rural learning. Her
dedication to equity ensures that every
tamaiti, regardless of their postcode, is seen,
supported, and given the opportunity to
shine.
Vivienne’s work with NZEI Te Riu Roa
spans more than two decades. She has been a
fierce and thoughtful advocate for educators
and tamariki, walking the talk when it comes
to creating meaningful change. Her
leadership in this space continues to inspire
others to step up and be part of the solution.
Beyond
education,
Vivienne
gives
generously to her community. Whether it’s
volunteering with St John, supporting local
sports, or showing up for grassroots
initiatives, she leads with the same energy
and heart that define her work in schools.
Vivienne Goldsmith is not only a respected
leader, she is a living example of what it
means to serve with integrity, vision, and
mana. We are proud to walk alongside her as
she continues this important mahi.
We celebrate you, Vivienne, not just for what
you’ve done, but for all you continue to do.
The best is still to come.
ASPARGUS
ASPARGOIDES
or Similax
Have you seen Smilax?
It is closely related to Climbing
asparagus, but not quite as vigorous,
and growing to 3m tall.
Why should you dig it out or spray it?
If left unchecked it will smother all
smaller plants, forming dense clumps
from sprouting tubers. Small white
flowers appear in winter followed by
berries that birds will spread. Similax is
drought resistant and very adaptable. It
will take over so tackle it now- get
digging or spray with 20ml of
glyphosate per litre of water.
Take the roots to landfill as they will
regrow otherwise.

PAPAROA AND MANGAWHAI
PARISHES
We have a new Vicar – Rev. Henk Lups (who also serves
the Paparoa churches, as well as Mangawhai and Hakaru).
FYI Currently the reference to Paparoa Parish means
Maungaturoto, Paparoa and Whakapirau. Kaiwaka is part of
the Mangawhai Parish consisting of Mangawhai, Hakaru
and Kaiwaka.
A change in the timetable for the Priest, who travels around
the six churches, means that services at St
Paul’s is now on the second and fourth
Sundays NOT the first and third Sundays.

On Friday 25th July perfect weather made for an awesome day at the Bay of
Islands Beast. Around 98 students took part, running just under 6km. Some
finished covered in mud, others surprisingly clean - but all had a blast!
On 23rd July, 150 Year 8 and 9 students met renowned NZ author Des Hunt,
supported by Kaipara District Council
Libraries. Des spoke about his writing journey
and process. His book Red Edge is part of the
2025 Te Tai Tokerau Book Battle. Two new
books, Quarry Lake and Dieback, are releasing
later this year. His books, suitable for older
primary and intermediate students, are
available in the school and local libraries.

INTERACT CLUB
Our Interact Club will
have their first outing
during the first week of
Term 3. They have
decided that they would
like
to
have
more
interaction with the people in the
Maungaturoto Rest Home. The plan is
to get involved in activities with the
residents. Many of them do not have a
great deal to do with young people and
this will be a great time for interaction
which will be beneficial for both
groups. This group hopes to have at
least three more sessions before the end
of Term.
EXCHANGE STUDENT
We were fortunate to greet our new
Exchange student from Belgium, Alina.
Alina will be staying with Jaime and
her family, and as Jaime spent last year
in Belgium, she will not only
understand what it is like to be on the
other side of the world, but to live in a
country where the culture is different.
Our Club is also supporting another
student who is going to Argentina next
January. Penny is fundraising by
cleaning windows, so if you see
“Shimmer and Shine” in your area, and
want your windows cleaned, please get
in touch with Penny.
SUPPORT OF KAIWAKA CAN
Our Club, at the initiative of Merv
Huxford, has found a way to support
Kaiwaka Can who are in the process of
obtaining resource consent to place a
pontoon at a tributary of the harbour
near McClean park. This will enable
kayakers and the like to more easily
access the water, regardless of tide.
DARGAVILLE ROTARY
Tim and I were fortunate to join the
members at the Dargaville Rotary club
on the occasion of their changeover. As
was the case last year, we were
entertained by a group from Dargaville
Little Theatre who have just finished a
season in “Out of Mind”. This amateur
group has won a place in an
international theatre festival in Monaco
in August. While the story was very
serious, the presentation and the
harmony was fantastic. We wish them
all the best next month.
PAPAROA MARKET
President Tim is having a stall on most
Saturdays at the Paparoa Market. From
his property (Puketitri) in Hawkes Bay
he has been able to harvest slabs from
previously felled redwoods that had
been left as undesirable. Not only is
Tim cutting this into slabs which he
will use to construct a house on his
property, but he is also using the timber
to create coffee table tops and the like.
Check out Tim’s stall as you will see
that the grain in this timber is quite
unique. Eric and his wife are also
supporting this, Eric with toys made
from timber, and Jill with beautifully
covered cushions. More items will be
added to the stall as they become
available.
NORTHLAND COMMUNITY
FOUNDATION
We were also fortunate to have Jane
Stearns and Richie Guy come to talk to
us about the Northland Community
Foundation. Not only does this group
provide grants to people in Northland
once a year, but it also provides an
avenue for investment.

SHEARING SPORTS NEW ZEALAND'S
POST - ‘ARISE SIR TOA - ROYAL WELSH
ALL-NATIONS OPEN CHAMPION’
Northland shearer, Toa Henderson, has scored a big win in claiming the Royal
Welsh Show All-Nations title. He and Wools of
New Zealand team, “master-blaster” Jack
Fagan, of Te Kuiti, did their best to slam the
Welsh on their home stage.
Henderson, won the Golden Shears and New
Zealand Open championships’ double in
March, and has won all three events to date in a
2026 World championship’s New Zealand team
selection series.
He blasted through the 20 Welsh speckle lambs
in under 12m 38s to be first off the board in the
six-man final. The time and quality points gave
him a comfortable win by 2.3pts over Welsh
shearer and reigning World champion Gwion Lloyd Evans,
who shore the 20 in 13m 23s..
Defending champion Fagan was third, just 0.15pts further
back, in his bid to win the title for a third time, while sixth
was a third New Zealand shearer, in Matt Smith, from
Northland and Hawke’s Bay but farming in Cornwall and set
to represent England in the World championships in
Masterton next March.
Henderson told the crowd it felt “pretty good” to make the
final after missing out in Cothi, and he was rapt to win at the
Royal Welsh in his first tour in the UK. “I did it for us,” he
said, as he raised the Godfrey Bowen Memorial Trophy. It
was the 50th anniversary Royal Welsh championship. His
father, Mike, was in the crowd, and it was Phoebe, his wife’s
birthday.
Saturday 27 July: Jack Fagan and Toa Henderson ended
their UK and France shearing tour with a win over Wales at
the Corwen Shears. A highlight was their haka performance
before the match, led by Toa Henderson, marking what’s
believed to be the first time New Zealand team members
have performed it at a Welsh competition. .

at the Royal Welsh Show where the supporters of the
shearing world shared their camaraderie with a haka.
Congratulations to all the winners, competitors and
everyone behind the scenes who helps put on this amazing

The Last Quiz Night on Earth:
It’s the end of the world. The last night on Earth. An asteroid is heading straight
for us and there’s nothing we can do about it except to maybe host a pub quiz –
which is exactly what landlady Kathy and her quizmaster Ray are doing. But,
with time ticking, some unexpected guests explode on the scene: Bobby wants to
settle old scores, and Fran wants one last shot at true love.
What to expect:
The Last Quiz Night on Earth is an innovative comedy-drama featuring a fully
interactive pub quiz, with dinner provided at the interval. Catering by Country
Caterers. Full audience participation is expected, complete with real teams, real
questions and real swapping each other’s answers for marking.
Performances:
There will be five dinner-theatre performances at the Hakaru Hall
Friday, 21st November (evening performance)
Saturday, 22nd November (evening performance)
Sunday, 23rd November (lunch performance)

KDC DOG REGISTRATIONS
Dog registrations can now be renewed. Make sure your furry friend is up to date by 31 August to avoid
penalty fees. Skip the queues and register online at kaipara.govt.nz/annual-dog-registration. If you have
concerns about paying on time, contact our customer services team. Dogs registered in Kaipara topped 5,000
for the first time in the 2024/2025 year with 5,194 dogs registered to 3,419 owners.
One hundred percent of dog registration fees go straight back into animal management – including patrols,
monitoring, maintaining shelter facilities, education programs and prosecution costs where necessary.
Council crackdown leads to drop in dog complaints
Proactive efforts by Kaipara District Council’s Animal Management team have
led to a major drop in dog-related incidents across the district. Complaints about
wandering dogs fell by 65% between July 2024 and June 2025, compared to the
previous year, with dog attacks also down 43% over the same period.
Manager Animal and Compliance Shaun Holland says the reduction is a credit
to the team’s shift of focus to proactive work around offences such as wandering
dogs and holding dog owners accountable for their dog’s behaviour.
Over the past year, the team has worked hard to reduce risks, focusing on
problem dogs, supporting their owners, and increasing patrols in hotspots
including Dargaville and the surf beach at Mangawhai.” The key to reducing
dog-related offences is making sure owners take responsibility for how their
dogs behave, says Shaun.
“Over the past year we impounded 92% of dogs that had allegedly attacked,
compared to 15% the previous year. Within those attack stats, we have been able
to identify and detain 80% of dogs responsible for attacks on stock, which has
always been an issue for the district. Our officers have been known to door-
knock every household on a street to identify the dog responsible for attacking
stock.”
“
We have a small animal management team – just four officers covering over
3,100km2 across the Kaipara. Over the last year, the team attended to 2,006
service requests – 373 of these were proactive property checks or patrols.”

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
New Shelves:
Many thanks to Mangawhai Library for giving us a set of
shelves that were surplus to their needs, and to the Kaipara
District Council staff who delivered them to us. They're
much smarter than the shelves we already have, and on
wheels so they can be moved around as needed. They'll be
taking the place of the shelves for the "new" books, and
that set of shelves will be used for the sale books, replac-
ing the table and rotunda.
Books for sale
We still have a range of old books for sale - 50c each, or 3
for $1.00. We've recently done a cull of the fiction shelves,
and there are new books coming out as space allows, that
you won't have seen before on the sales table
Book review
I've read so many books since my last report, I'm not sure
where to start! Let's begin with the "cosy" thrillers...
there's been A Cornish Seaside
Murder by Fiona Leitch (Nosey
Parker #6), A Decline in Proph-
ets, Miles Off Course, and Paving
the New Road by Sulari Gen-
till (Rowland Sinclair #2, 3, &4),
and Murder In Merrywell by Jane
Bettany (Violet Brewster #1). All
good reads, and we have more in
those series on our shelves.
Less "cosy" but a good thriller all
the same, was The Night She
Fell by Eileen Merriman; she's
always a good read. And a bit of
romance with some interesting his-
tory thrown in
was the Wild Isles series by Karen
Swan - The Last Summer, The Stolen
Hours, The Lost Lover, and The Mid-
night Secret - following the lives and
loves of the residents of the remote isle
of St Kilda off the coast of Scotland,
who in 1930 were evacuated to the
mainland because there were no longer
enough people there to do the work to
survive another winter. That really
happened, and these stories are a fic-
tion
built
around
that
event. I borrowed this series from
Mangawhai Library.
And finally, a bit of science fiction
- The Fated Sky by Mary Robi-
nette Kowal, the 2nd book in
the Lady Astronaut series. I en-
joyed that so much that I've dived
straight into the 3rd book, and have
ordered the 4th which will arrive in
a few weeks.
See you in the library ~Wendy

DARING SEA RESCUE
FLYING-BOAT LANDING
AIRMAN’S IMMEDIATE AWARD
The King has approved the immediate
award of the Distinguished Flying
Cross to Flight-Lieutenant Ross Stuart
McHardy, whose wife is Mrs E. J.
McHardy, of Auckland. The award is in
recognition
of
gallantry
during
operations against the ‘enemy in the
South Pacific area.
The citation states: “
With a keen wind whipping the sea into
broken-topped waves too high to enable
rescue launches to operate, this captain
of
a
Catalina flying-boat
was
responsible, on 30th June, 1944, for a
masterly rescue of the crew of an Allied
dive-bomber forced down at sea some
20 miles off Guadalcanal, The two
survivors, an American pilot and his
radio-man, had been located earlier,
and an effort was made to rescue them
but the sea was too rough to enable the
prospective rescuers to put their flying-
boat down, and also prevented small
surface craft from operating. Flight
Lieutenant McHardy was then detailed
to undertake the rescue, and by his skill
and courage succeeded in what seemed
a hopeless task. In spite of the real risk
of damage to his aircraft, a landing was
made along the top of the swell, and the
aircraft was allowed to drift back upon
the dinghy from which the two men
were picked up. Their dinghy was also
salvaged and the Catalina, although
damaged by the pounding it had
received, was flown back to base after a
skilful open water take off. Flight
Lieutenant McHardy's achievement was
typical of the cool efficiency that has
marked
his
operational
flying,
comprising over 100 missions in
Singapore, Sumatra, Ceylon, India,
New Hebrides, Tonga and the
Solomons. In over 1,000 operational
hours flying, he has shown exemplary
skill and judgement and extreme
devotion to duty." (Hanson, p. 336).

A reminder to please take care when
dropping your tamariki off in the
mornings up at our top carpark. The
buses have right of way. Please do not
block the driveway in any way. A safer
option is to park down at the KSA
carpark and your tamariki can walk up
the hill from the bottom gate. We need
your help to ensure the safety of our
tamariki at drop off times.
Nomination forms have been sent out
for those of you who would like to be
put forward as a parent representative
on our Kaiwaka School Board of
Trustees. Please get your nomination in
by the due date.
We have a visiting author coming in on
Friday to do a presentation to our
students. His name is Des Hunt.
If you have any of his books at home,
you are welcome to bring them in for
him to sign. A huge thank you to
Kaipara Libraries for covering the cost
of this visit.
Last Friday our students and teachers
put on a surprise morning tea to
celebrate Principal 's Day. Some of our
classes created amazing artwork and
kind words of appreciation for our
Acting Principal, Michelle Dempsey-
